Tony Bellew, the former cruiserweight world champion, has joined the chorus of voices expressing dismay over the upcoming Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul clash.
In a scathing critique, Bellew questioned the decision to sanction the bout as a professional contest, despite various factors casting doubt on its legitimacy, including Tyson’s recent health concerns and the significant 30-year age gap between the two fighters.
Speaking to Ace odds, Bellew didn’t hold back in his assessment of the situation. “How the f*** has that been getting registered as a professional bout?” he exclaimed, highlighting key details such as the use of 14-ounce gloves and the implementation of two-minute rounds.
Bellew’s incredulity extended to Jake Paul, whom he accused of seeking to bolster his record by facing the legendary Tyson. “That idiot Jake Paul just wants to be on Mike Tyson’s record,” Bellew remarked, denouncing the move as “insane.”
Further adding to Bellew’s consternation is the deviation from the norms of professional boxing.
“Mike Tyson’s whole career has been fought over three-minute rounds,” Bellew pointed out, expressing bewilderment over Tyson’s willingness to participate in a bout with shorter rounds.
He emphasized that such abbreviated rounds are typically associated with women’s boxing, not men’s, labeling the decision to sanction the bout as a “disgrace” and a “p*** take.”
