Zhilei Zhang delivered a stunning knockout blow to Deontay Wilder in the fifth round of their showdown.
Had Wilder displayed a more impressive performance, Anthony Joshua might have been his next opponent.
However, following a lackluster display against Joseph Parker, the former WBC heavyweight champion needed a decisive victory to reclaim his spot among the division’s elite.
Unfortunately for Wilder, he once again fell short, appearing hesitant and far from his prime self. While Zhang’s performance wasn’t extraordinary either, he managed to dispatch Wilder in the end.
Before the main event, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh had hinted at the possibility of arranging a Joshua vs. Wilder fight.
However, Wilder’s underwhelming performance has cast doubt on his future in the sport, with retirement now looming as a possibility after just one win in his last five fights.
Anthony Joshua, present at ringside, was asked by DAZN about his thoughts on Wilder’s defeat. His response was succinct: “Nah, it is what it is.”
Looking ahead, Joshua’s next challenge could come in the form of a September showdown at Wembley against Daniel Dubois, who showcased a spirited performance in his victory over Filip Hrgovic via a doctor’s stoppage due to cuts.
Who wins a clash between Joshua and Dubois? Let us know in the comments.
