Chael Sonnen, known for his outspoken nature, once made a bold claim regarding Jon Jones, suggesting that the UFC champion could defeat boxing legends Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in the same day.
Sonnen, who faced Jones in a highly anticipated light heavyweight championship bout at UFC 159 in 2013, expressed deep admiration for Jones’ talent and skill, stating, “I don’t think he understands how good he is.”
In the lead-up to UFC 159, Sonnen showered praise on Jones during a media conference call, particularly highlighting Jones’ gesture of paying tribute to Tyson and Ali.
However, Sonnen followed this praise with a statement that captured widespread attention, asserting, “the reality is that Jon Jones could beat Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in the same day.”
Jones, who was 25 years old at the time of the fight, went on to prove his dominance in the octagon by securing a first-round TKO victory over Sonnen at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
This victory further solidified Jones’ status as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.
Leading up to the bout, Sonnen had already expressed his belief in Jones’ superiority, stating, “you are the best” and “you’re the best the weight class has ever seen.”
He also praised Jones for tying Tito Ortiz’s record for the most successful light heavyweight title defenses in UFC history at that time.
Sonnen’s comments sparked debate among fans and analysts, with some applauding his confidence in Jones’ abilities, while others viewed his statements as exaggerated.
Nevertheless, Sonnen’s admiration for Jones’ talent and his belief in his capabilities were evident throughout the lead-up to their fight, highlighting the respect and competitiveness that defined their rivalry in the MMA world.
