Mike Tyson’s recent workout videos on social media have stirred up excitement, but British heavyweight Dave Allen isn’t keen on the idea of Tyson returning to the boxing ring.
Allen firmly believes he could defeat a 53-year-old Mike Tyson, which, for him, is a clear indicator that Tyson should stay retired.
Tyson’s online videos, coupled with his old rival Evander Holyfield’s expressed interest in comeback bouts, have fueled speculation about Tyson’s future in the sport.
However, Allen, with a record of 18 wins, five defeats, and two draws, expresses discomfort at the prospect, especially considering Tyson’s lengthy absence from professional boxing.
In an interview with talkSPORT 2, Allen stated, “If I got offered the Mike Tyson fight, the money would be fantastic but it wouldn’t sit right, would it? A lot of people would laugh at this, but this is the fact – I would beat a 53-year-old Mike Tyson.
And that is the saddest thing any boxing fan wants to hear. For that reason alone, he should never box again.”
He argues that boxing is a young person’s sport, highlighting his own age and career concerns.
Allen suggests that Tyson’s recent pad work clips might give a false impression of his capabilities, overlooking the harsh realities of his later career struggles against opponents he would have easily handled in his prime.
Recalling Tyson’s defeats to Lennox Lewis, Danny Williams, and Kevin McBride over a decade ago, Allen emphasizes that while Tyson is undoubtedly one of the greatest fighters in history, time has taken its toll, and he’s unlikely to regain his former glory.
Therefore, Allen concludes, “I don’t really want to see it.”
