Authorities in the Eastern Cape have initiated an investigation following the tragic incident of a 32-year-old woman’s accidental drowning in the Gqeberha harbour during the early hours of Thursday.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, spokesperson for the police, disclosed that the woman, who was employed at the vehicle terminal, encountered the unfortunate mishap around 3:45 am.
According to witnesses, while maneuvering a Ford Ranger onto the vessel carrier, the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated, plunging into the harbour waters.
Despite efforts, the woman was unable to exit the submerged vehicle, resulting in her drowning.
Her identity is being withheld until her next of kin are notified, and authorities continue to gather information regarding the incident.
